What it is
Glovebox Operator is the iPhone app for you and your staff. This first release does one job: it puts your fleet's GPS alerts on your phone, so you find out when something is wrong rather than the next time somebody opens a laptop.
Your customers do not need it. They keep using your booking site.
Signing in
Use your existing Glovebox email and password. Accounts are not created in the app: if a staff member needs one, add them under Settings → Staff first.
Owners, admins and staff can use the app. Contractors cannot, and will not see an Alerts tab.
If your account uses two-step sign in, sign in on the website first.
What the alerts mean
| Alert | What happened |
|---|---|
| Movement with no hire | The vehicle is being driven and nothing is booked against it |
| Power cut | The tracker lost power, or reported tampering |
| Overdue | A hire is past its return time and the vehicle is not back |
| Tracker offline on hire | A vehicle on hire has stopped reporting |
| Tracker silent at base | A vehicle at your depot has stopped reporting, usually a dead unit |
| Overspeed | Sustained speed above your threshold |
Two of these are worth knowing more about.
Movement with no hire is the theft alert, and it is only useful if it stays quiet when nothing is wrong. If a vehicle moves off hire as a matter of routine, a staff car or a courtesy car, open that vehicle and turn on Expected to move without a booking on its Status & access tab. Otherwise every errand is reported as a possible theft, and within a week nobody reads the alerts.
Power cut only works on a tracker wired to constant 12V. On an ignition-switched supply the unit loses power every time the vehicle is parked, so the alert would fire on every parking and mean nothing. It stays off for a unit until you tick Constant power against it under Settings → Tracking.
Dealing with an alert
Open one and you get the vehicle, a map of where it is and where it has been in the last hour, the hire it belongs to if there is one, and the hirer's number.
- Acknowledge means "I have seen this and I am on it". Your team can see who did.
- Resolve closes it, with an optional note. The note is the useful part: "unit was unplugged during a service, no theft" saves the next person the same investigation.
Resolving can be undone for a few seconds afterwards. After that it stands, which is deliberate: the history of an alert is a record, not a draft.
Most alerts close themselves. A late vehicle that comes back, or a tracker that starts reporting again, resolves automatically and shows as closed by the system rather than by a person.
Notifications
Urgent alerts come through even when your phone is silent. Everything else waits quietly in the inbox. You choose which types notify you, per workspace, under Settings in the app, and you can set quiet hours. Quiet hours never hold back an urgent alert.
If notifications are not arriving:
- Check the alert type is switched on in the app's Settings.
- Check iPhone Settings → Notifications → Glovebox allows them.
- Check tracking is switched on for that workspace, and that the vehicle has a tracker paired.
More than one brand
If you run more than one workspace, Switch at the top of the Alerts screen moves between them. Alerts, settings and notification choices all follow the workspace you pick. You keep getting notifications from every workspace you belong to, whichever one is showing.
About location
The app shows the location of your vehicles, reported by the trackers fitted to them. It does not ask for, use or collect the location of your phone.
